A fob is an adornment or a seal that hangs from the ribbon or chain of a pocket watch. Its purpose is to decorate or add weight to the watch chain itself making it easier for the watch to be withdrawn from a pocket. The fob would have been used to seal the wax of a letter or note.?

A Tassie is a paste or glass copy of a cameo or intaglio. Scottish gem engraver James Tassie created replicas of ancient agates and gemstones and together with Dr. Quin of Dublin, they came up with an opaque glass that could replicate various colors and patterns. Tassies were created using a molding process rather than carving.

This lovely figural tassie fob from the Victorian (ca1880) era is particularly unusual! Made of sterling silver, this wonderful 3-dimensional piece depicts a Victorian woman, who stands upon a large platform above a base that holds the tassie seal. The lady is dressed in traditional fine Victorian fashion, including a full skirted dress, long buttoned overcoat with collar and a fashionable hat with a feather. The base of the fob is textured on the top with a hammered surface, and a thick twisted rope border hugs the tall base. At the bottom of the fob is a yellow glass tassie seal held within a bezel. The tassie has the image of two hands reaching towards each other, along with the mirror image of the words "WE PART TO MEET AGAIN". At the top of the fob is a simple sterling ring, allowing the piece to be hung and worn on a chain. This unusual and heavy Victorian fob has a wonderful design and is simply perfect for any fob collector!

Measurements: The overall height of the fob measures 2 1/8" tall, and is 1" by 7/8" at the widest and thickest points. The woman is approximately 1 3/8" tall and 3/8" wide. The base of the fob measures 3/4" by 5/8".

Condition: The overall condition of the fob is excellent. Besides normal surface wear, there is no apparent damage to the sterling silver or glass tassie, which is intact. The bail is secure and in good condition.
